Description
The Dragon Cam is a patented twin axle, single stem camming device that is the perfect mainstream cam for traditional climbing.
We spent over 2 years designing a single stem camming device that would compliment our existing range of 4CU cams. All our initial research indicated that on mainstream cams climbers value cams with an increased expansion range so we decided to see what we could do with a multi axle design.
We eventually decided to use a double axle design and work out the weaknesses - weight, cam angle, stems twisting and lack of a doubled sling. Hence the Dragon cam was born.
DMM Dragons have been designed without compromise to produce a blend of strength, lightness and functionality.
The cams use a single stem with hot forged cams mounted on a dual axle. We have kept Ray Jardines original 13.75° constant camming angle that maximises holding power without compromising range. We have also kept the extendable, double dyneema sling that saves on quickdraws and reduces the weight of your rack even further. These are the fundamentals around which Dragons are designed.
We use six sizes to cover a range from 20mm to 114mm.
The cams use relatively strong springs - this means the units feel slightly harder to retract, but the advantages are worth it: they will sit more securely in placements, they will have improved resistance to being pulled out of low friction placements and they will walk less.
The patented thumb termination uses an aluminum forging that is massively strong, resistant to abuse and crucially lets us use an extendable sling. It was not possible to use a wire loop with an extendable sling because we found that the dyneema sling was cutting through the wire thumb loop (This does not happen on the 4CUs because of the cross bar supports the wire loop and stops it collapsing and creating stress points). The forging is actually lighter than the wire loop it replaced.
The stem uses 5.5mm stainless steel wire cover in a hydrolised nylon sleeve. The nylon sleeve rotates freely to reduce abrasion damage and gives the units really good flexibility throughout 360°. In addition we have used very short terminations that increase flexibility. Thus when the cams are placed in shallow vertical or horizontal cracks the units are less likely to be levered out of the placement.
The trigger bar is made from the same material and is very positive in use with sufficient relief to offer grip to the sweatiest of fingers.
